As I mentioned in my last post, this week’s devotions from the John Maxwell Leadership Bible focused on the Law of E.F. Hutton (“When you talk, people listen…”). To command attention, you need “presence.”
A few years back, I read Harrison Monarth’s book on Executive Presence: The Art of Commanding Respect Like a CEO. Monarth advises leaders to master a multitude of communication skills to create an executive presence. These skills include:
- Reading people and predicting their behavior
- Influencing the perceptions and behavior of those around you
- Persuading those of opposing views to come over to your side
- Creating and maintaining a personal brand that broadcasts your positive reputation to a wide audience
- Managing and controlling your reputation
