Sabbath Rest is such a counter-cultural principle in today’s American society. We measure ourselves by success and achievement. In fact, we often even work at resting…it’s another thing to do, instead of allowing ourselves just to be in the presence of God…
From Hebrews 4, we recognize that sabbath rest serves as a deterrent to making idols out of our work. The people of God should be a people who work hard when it is time to work, and play hard when it is time to play.
One of the best resources I’ve found to help truly practice Sabbath rest is Bill Hybels’ book Simplify. Check out my summary of that book, first published nearly two years ago (but it is definitely worth repeating!).
