As we celebrate Easter, we look to the cross and want to lead like Jesus Christ. Former book summaries include both Boyd Bailey’s Learning to Lead Like Jesus: 11 Principles to Help You Serve, Inspire, and Equip Others (February 2020) and Ken Blanchard & Phil Hodges’ Lead Like Jesus (January 2014).
Now, let’s turn to the 2021 book Lead Like Christ: Reflecting the Qualities and Character of Christ in Your Ministry by A.W. Tozer and James L. Snyder. Tozer, who lived from 1897 until 1963, was a self-taught theologian, pastor, and writer whose powerful words continue to grip the intellect and stir the soul of today’s believer. He authored more than forty books. The Pursuit of God and The Knowledge of the Holy are considered modern devotional classics.
Reverend James L. Snyder’s first book, The Life of A.W. Tozer: In Pursuit of God, won the Reader’s Choice Award in 1992 by Christianity Today. Because of his thorough knowledge of the theologian, Snyder was awarded rights from the A.W. Tozer estate to produce new books derived from over four hundred never-before-published audiotapes.
Snyder points out that this is not an inspirational book to help spiritual leaders feel good about themselves. Rather, it should be considered a workbook to empower men and women to be the kinds of leaders needed by the church today and drive them to their knees in absolute surrender.
The challenge Tozer gives is to follow the real Jesus—the Jesus of the New Testament—and be prepared to be treated like Christ was treated in His day.
