In a December 2013 Harvard Business Review article on “Focused Leaders,” Daniel Goleman explained, “Every leader needs to cultivate a triad of awareness—focusing on yourself, focusing on others, and focusing on the wider world… Focusing inward and focusing constructively on others helps leaders cultivate the primary elements of emotional intelligence. [On the other hand], a failure to focus inward leaves you rudderless, a failure to focus on others renders you clueless, and a failure to focus outward may leave you blindsided.”
On Friday, our HR Leadership Team participated in a team building retreat facilitated by Connie Charles, Founder and CEO of Strategic Solutions International. As a leader in applications of The Birkman Method® assessment, SSI assists organizations in quickly developing a sophisticated understanding of the team.
From my natural strengths and behaviors, the Birkman notes how I can bring “Focus” to our team. As the assessment put it, I am organized and consistent in my approach and can be insightful and perceptive. By the way, the photo above was taken from a video about the Christian Leadership Alliance’s Mentoring program (my part runs from about the 9:30 mark until the 12-minute mark).
