When I think about “Helping Others Win”—the theme for this month—I consider the perspective afforded by Russ Crosson’s What Makes a Leader Great, where he offered that it’s a leader’s responsibility to train and prepare your successor.
Last April, I learned about Dr. David McKenna’s The Succession Principle: How Leaders Make Leaders in the Christian Leadership Alliance’s Outcomes magazine. In his book, Dr. McKenna explains that our responsibility as leaders includes planning our departures in such a way that we cast no shadow over our successors.
Dr. Gayle Beebe, President of Westmont College, offers that McKenna helps us recognize that our greatest legacy is to leave a place better than we found it: better resourced, better focused, and better aligned to guarantee momentum that can launch the leadership of those who follow us.
