Sticky Faith

My One Word for 2022 is Faith.  Like many parents, I want to build a lasting faith in my kids.

In the Summer of 2016, our Youth Pastor (Kyle Wilson) gave me a copy of Dr. Kara Powell and Dr. Chap Clark’s Sticky Faith.

They started the book with these “Not-So-Sticky-Faith” realities:

  • 40-50% of kids who graduate from a church or youth group will fail to stick with their faith in college.
  • Only 20% of college students who leave the faith planned to do so during high school.  The remaining 80% intended to stick with their faith but didn’t.
  • Somewhere between 30-60% of youth group graduates who abandon their faith and the church return to both in their late twenties.
  • Each month, just less than 50% of full-time college students binge drink, abuse prescription drugs, and/or abuse illegal drugs.
  • College seniors have an average of nearly seven hookups during their collegiate careers, with 28% of them hooking up ten times or more.

Sticky Faith leads our kids to a different future.

One Word for 2022: Faith

As a reminder, Jon Gordon says, “When you discover your One Word for the year, it gives you more clarity, passion and purpose for life.  The One Word exercise brings simplicity and focus. It cuts through the distractions and keeps us focused on what really matters.”

I’ve used One Word as a focus for spiritual growth with my blog the past four years:

  • 2021 = “Basic” with a focus on The Apostles’ Creed
  • 2020 = “Sheep” with a focus on Psalm 23
  • 2019 = “Wisdom” with a focus on Proverbs
  • 2018 = “Optimism” with a focus on The Beatitudes

For 2022, I felt led to focus on the “Hall of Faith”—and study the heroes of the Christian Faith.
