Honoring a G.R.E.A.T. Mother

Mom

During this fifth month of the year, I continue my focus on the fifth of the Ten Commandments, which says, “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.”

As my last post attests, I often write here about the influence of my Dad on my leadership style and effectiveness, and I am grateful for his example, encouragement, and support.  But I’ve learned a lot about life and leadership from my Mom as well.

Today, as we celebrate Mother’s Day 2017, I reflect on five of my favorite takeaways from my Mom’s life and influence that have shaped me into the husband, father, leader, and man I am today.

Happy Mother’s Day, Mom!

Grateful to Be Influenced by an Anchor Man

Easter 2017

Nearly ten years ago, I was excited to read Steve Farrar’s Anchor Man.  Mr. Farrar was a neighbor to my brother and his family and had a significant influence on his life.  Farrar’s subtitle for the book is a life pattern I’ve inherited from my grandfather and father and one that I strive to continue:  how a father can anchor his family in Christ for the next 100 years.

I described Paw Paw’s legacy as he celebrated his 95th birthday—the day that he passed away—on July 29, 2015.  Now, as we turn the calendar to the fifth month of the year, it’s time to practice the Fifth Commandment and honor my Dad.
