The Law of Influence

Leadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less...titles don't have much value when it comes to leading. True leadership cannot be awarded, appointed, or assigned, it comes only from influence, and that cannot be mandated. It must be earned. - John C. Maxwell

John Maxwell says, “The true meaning of leadership is influence—nothing more, nothing less.” This week’s Maxwell Leadership Bible devotions focus on the Law of Influence. Drawing from stories about Joshua, we can see a time in his life when he was less influential and ultimately how he became a man of great influence.

Interestingly, I can trace parallels between Joshua’s story and my own—particularly at the moment in time when the leadership mantle transitioned from Moses to Joshua.

Honoring a Lid Lifter: Natalie Saiz

Natalie Saiz

John Maxwell says, “Leadership ability is the lid that determines a person’s level of effectiveness.” He calls this the Law of the Lid. Your leadership ability—for better or worse—always determines the potential impact you can have on your organization. To shoot for the stars, you have to raise the lid on your leadership ability.

This week, our Human Resources Director of 11 years stepped aside in order to lift the lid not only for her own career but also for those who follow her in the organization. As NASA’s Johnson Space Center Director Ellen Ochoa noted, Natalie Saiz wanted to further enhance her business acumen while also providing opportunities for others in her organization. I personally benefited from Natalie’s leadership and her decision, as Dr. Ochoa named me Acting Director of Human Resources effective January 26th.
