Does Your Team Buy-In to Your Vision?

People buy into the leader before they buy into the vision. - John C. Maxwell

Do you ever ask, “Will my team buy in to my vision?” If you do, that’s a common leadership question. John Maxwell answers that question the same way every time it’s asked, “First tell me this—do your team members buy in to you?”

Many of us believe if the cause is good enough, people will automatically buy in to it and follow. But that’s not how leadership works. People don’t first follow worthy causes; they follow worthy leaders who promote worthwhile causes.

People buy in to the leader first, then the leader’s vision. That’s the 14th Law of Leadership, as it’s described in the Maxwell Leadership Bible.

Whatever job you have–whether you’re on a team or with an organization–have you considered who is ready to step in and take over for you? Are you able to quickly and affirmatively answer that question? If not, John Maxwell’s Leadership Bible offers some practical advice.

In his 13th Law of Leadership—the Law of Reproduction—Maxwell states, “It takes a Leader to raise up a Leader.”
