Are You a Giver or Receiver?

Candle Lighting Another

Leaders must be generous, predisposed to give their resources to others. They believe a candle loses nothing when it lights another.

When Out of This World Leaders err, they err on the side of generosity. If they err in paying salaries, they err in paying too much. If they err in firing a staff member, they err on the side of excessive emotional support, severance package, and affirmation. No leader gets ahead by mimicking Ebenezer Scrooge.

How can you learn to be more generous in your leadership? Check out these lessons from Boaz and Ananias and Sapphira in John Maxwell’s Leadership Bible.

Are You a Focused Leader?

At 2015 CLA Conference

In a December 2013 Harvard Business Review article on “Focused Leaders,” Daniel Goleman explained, “Every leader needs to cultivate a triad of awareness—focusing on yourself, focusing on others, and focusing on the wider world… Focusing inward and focusing constructively on others helps leaders cultivate the primary elements of emotional intelligence. [On the other hand], a failure to focus inward leaves you rudderless, a failure to focus on others renders you clueless, and a failure to focus outward may leave you blindsided.”

On Friday, our HR Leadership Team participated in a team building retreat facilitated by Connie Charles, Founder and CEO of Strategic Solutions International. As a leader in applications of The Birkman Method® assessment, SSI assists organizations in quickly developing a sophisticated understanding of the team.

From my natural strengths and behaviors, the Birkman notes how I can bring “Focus” to our team. As the assessment put it, I am organized and consistent in my approach and can be insightful and perceptive. By the way, the photo above was taken from a video about the Christian Leadership Alliance’s Mentoring program (my part runs from about the 9:30 mark until the 12-minute mark).

John Maxwell lists Focus as one of his 21 Qualities of a Leader. This week’s devotions show how a lack of Focus hurt Solomon and a laser-like focus helped Paul achieve great things.
