Got Followers? Got Mentors? Out of This World Leaders Need Both!

Boiled down to its most fundamental element, leadership requires followers. Admittedly, there are a few charismatic leaders, who can naturally draw followers. For most of us, though, we have to build relationships with others. Or, like John Maxwell says, “He who thinks he leads, but has no followers, is only taking a walk.”

Fortunately, the Bible has something to say about relationships. In fact, weeks 26 & 27 of the NIV Leadership Bible are all about “Interpersonal Relationships.” Starting in Genesis, God created people to live in community when he stated, “It is not good for the man to be alone” (2:18). Throughout the Bible, the most highly acclaimed leaders built relationships that helped their followers grow.

Got Wisdom?

Not all leaders think about wisdom as a character trait that needs to be carefully cultivated. However, Week 23 of the NIV Leadership Bible focuses on it. If you followed my posts carefully, you may have noticed that I skipped week from Week 22 to Week 24. That wasn’t intentional, and I nearly missed this important lesson…

Proverbs 8:32-36 captures the words of a mother, who says: “Now then, my children, listen to me:  blessed are those who keep my ways. Listen to my instruction and be wise; do not disregard it. Blessed are those who listen to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway. For those who find me find life and receive favor from the Lord. But those who fail to find me harm themselves; all who hate me love death.”

Can you think of anything more valuable to leadership than this?
