Are You Teachable?

A few years back, I sought career advice from Mike Bonem, who successfully transitioned from life as a McKinsey consultant to the role of Executive Pastor for his church. At the time, Mike advised me to join the Christian Leadership Alliance–an organization dedicated to the professional development of non-profit executives–which has afforded me some unique speaking and mentoring opportunities.

I also read Bonem’s book In Pursuit of Great AND Godly Leadership and subscribed to his blog. In a recent post, Bonem reminded me of advice provided by James Kouzes and Barry Posner in their seminal book The Leadership Challenge where they advised leaders “to remain humble and unassuming – to always remain open and full of wonder.”

That brings us to the 20th of John Maxwell’s 21 Indisputable Qualities of a Leader: Teachability.  What can you learn of this important leadership quality from King Nebuchadnezzar and Apollos?

So, I find it affirming that the 19th of John Maxwell’s 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader focuses on Servanthood–the true measure of greatness. Last year, we focused on the NIV Leadership Bible’s perspective with the post on “Jesus Christ: The Ultimate Servant Leader.”

Jesus went to great lengths to earn the title “Servant.” How about you? What can you learn from Jesus’ example and the contrast he provides to the typical worldview on leadership?
