“Thy will be done.” God’s will. What is it?

Our Father’s will. Can it be known?

Modern expressions of this phrase of the Lord’s Prayer include:

  • “Your will be done” — the direct modern translation
  • “May your will be accomplished”
  • “Let your purposes prevail”
  • “I surrender to your plan”
  • “Not my will, but yours”
  • “Whatever you desire, let it happen”
  • “I trust your direction”
  • “Let things unfold according to your will”

In Christian contexts, this phrase is associated with both the Lord’s Prayer and Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, just before His crucifixion, when He prayed, “Not my will, but yours be done.”

That same expression is often used today to communicate surrender, trust, obedience, and acceptance of God’s guidance.
