Yesterday, our Deacon Fellowship at University Baptist Church focused on evangelism. Specifically, our Senior Pastor, Dr. Will Rushing, provided some specific training that he entitled “The Pursuit,” noting how God pursues us, using the example of Adam & Eve following their disobedience to His only command when Genesis 3:9 says: “But the Lord God called to the man, ‘Where are you?'”
It made me consider how prior to The Fall, Adam and Eve had “the perfect job, the perfect marriage, the perfect life, and the perfect relationship with God.” Then, Satan intervened, “Did God really say…”
Here was Satan, who at one time was an angel (Colossians 1:16). At some point before Genesis 3, he rebelled against God. 1 Timothy 3:6 points out that a church overseer should not be a recent convert: “…or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil.”
This indicates the devil’s condemnation was a result of pride, which is consistent with Isaiah 14:13–14, where the speaker says, “I will ascend…”, “I will raise my throne…”, and “I will make myself like the Most High.” This language has often been understood as reflecting the pride and rebellion associated with Sata
In Luke 10:18, Jesus says, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.”
And Satan continues to try to convince me every day that I don’t need God, or did God really say…?
