This year, my One Word focus is Humility. One of my favorite books to reference for my leadership tip to “Ask Questions… Don’t Give Answers” is Dr. Edgar Schein’s Humble Inquiry.
So, it should come as no surprise that this is the right time to focus on the 2018 book that Schein authored with his son Peter entitled Humble Leadership: The Power of Relationships, Openness, and Trust.
Their book proposes a relational view of leadership, framing it as a process of learning, sharing, and directing new and better action within the dynamic interpersonal processes that increasingly characterize today’s organizations.
It should be noted that leadership is always a relationship, and truly successful leadership thrives when there is openness and high trust.
In fact, the Scheins write, “We see leadership as a complex mosaic of relationships, not as a two-dimensional, top-down status in a hierarchy, nor as a set of unusual gifts or talents of ‘high-potential’ individuals.”
