Humility—my One Word for 2026—stands alone among the virtues in that as soon as you think you have it, you probably don’t.

John Dickson posed this question, “How do I see myself as an author of a book about humility? I am a dominance-leaning, achievement-focused, driven personality who has accidentally fallen in love with an intriguing ancient virtue. As part of my professional development last year, I submitted to the well-known DISC analysis of behavioral patterns. To quote the report, ‘An additional way to boost your efficiency would be to increase your patience and improve your sense of humility.’”

So, Dickson set out to really understand humility—and its Latin root humilitas—that became the content of his 2011 book.
